The “Pre-set.” Golf lessons in Greenville SC.

Precision and repeatability are two important things for developing a deadly short game. If you have read the other materials on the Gravity Golf short game, you are aware that the easiest way to create consistency is to not shift your weight at all, since the weight shift is only used for extra power. Once you to feel how to place all of your weight over your front foot, with the weight in the heel (left foot for right-handed players and vice versa), you should sense that you can effortlessly turn your entire body through the impact position. The way you do this is by opening your body up to the target and moving the ball back in your stance. This insures that you can continue to accelerate completely through the shot without the arms having to move independently of the core.

The next move is the "preset."  Once your weight is totally on your leading foot, take your trailing hip and rotate it far enough back to push your weight onto your front heel and your body to the edge of your "safety envelope."  Be certain when doing this not to let your front knee bend forward and send the weight into the quadriceps of your front leg.  You want to feel the weight in the hamstring.  The leg should be slightly un-locked. This move serves two purposes: first – as soon you start the back-swing you will feel your body turning over your balance point and creating a free flowing back swing with a natural transition into the down-swing.  Secondly – it will insure that there is no tendency to sway when the back-swing starts.  Every time you start a short shot, you should feel the weight as far on the back of your front heel as possible.  Doing this will allow you to start the swing by going over the edge of your safety envelope, the forward swing will be totally effortless, and you can develop the touch of a master.

An important side note: if you are having difficulty feeling ease in your rotation, keep playing with your ball position – it should be farther back than you would normally think to go.  Also, be careful not to line up across your intended flight-line – it will jam your rotation and cause you to miss-hit the shot.

Work on these things by doing the Gravity Golf drills and watch your scores drop!

  1. This is another brilliant description of how to hit a golf shot with pure rotation. These last 2 videos were very well done to capture the essence of what we are trying to do as "Gravity Golfers"

  2. Thank you Dr. Dill. I've been watching so many golfers going through difficulties transitioning from what they are feeling in their short game to their long game and vice versa. This has led me to try and find the easiest ways to engage the core moving, but while having as little lateral movement as possible
